1) “Meal” Tops List First Time Among Overseas Visitors – Destinations Remain Undispersed
Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) is due to issue “Destination Survey of Overseas Visitors to Japan 2009” on July 30, which reveals that for the first time “meal” tops the list of wishes made by foreign travelers before their visit to Japan. The survey is conducted every year by JNTO, targeting on overseas visitors leaving for home from Japan’s eight international airports and Kyushu’s Hakata Port. A simple comparison is not possible as questions may not always be the same. However, it is noteworthy that, in the survey conducted in FY2006, only 19.4 percent of the respondents showed concern for meals during the tour while, in FY2007 and FY2008, concern for meals substantially increased to 36.5 percent and 37.0 percent respectively.
Of those respondents satisfied with Japanese meals, when specifically asked about one’s favorite food, 42.1 percent said “Sushi,” the highest of all, followed by “Ramen,” 20.8 percent and “Sashimi, 19.8 percent. “Sushi” topped the other Japanese meals in all the strategic travel markets targeted on by the Japan Visit Campaign (JVC) with the exception of Taiwan. 36.2 percent of Taiwanese responded that “Ramen” is the most favorite Japanese meal.
On the other hand, there has been no remarkable change in favored destinations. In term of the percentage of visitor arrivals by regions, Kanto posted 64.5 percent, up by 1.0 percentage point, followed by Kansai, 33.1 percent, down by 0.3 percentage point and Chubu, 20.8 percent down by 0.1 percentage point. There is no change in the ranking. By prefectures, Tokyo (58.8%), Osaka (24.4%), Kyoto (20.6%), Kanagawa (16.7%) and others, up to seven prefectures, have kept the same ranking as in the previous survey. Hokkaido (8%) has, however, attained eighth place, for the first time, beating Hyogo Prefecture (7.9%).
The percentage of regular leisure travelers rose by 1.0 percentage point to 56.3 percent except in U.S., UK and Russia. By style of traveling, most markets see an increase of individual travelers with the exception of Taiwan. The number of free independent travelers accounts for 63.8 percent of the total visitor arrivals in Japan with an overall increase of 6.3 percentage points. The survey was conducted on returning foreign travelers from Hokkaido’s Shin Chitose, Sendai, Narita, Haneda, Chubu, Kansai, Fukuoka and Okinawa’s Naha airports and Kyushu’s Hakata Port with the total length of stay more than two days but not exceeding 90 days. A total of 15,355 visitors responded to the survey conducted over the period of six months in 2009, covering the months of January/February, July/August and October/November.
訪日外国人の期待、「食事」が初の1位に－訪問地の分散は進まず
日本政府観光局（JNTO）が7月30日に発行する報告書「JNTO訪日外客訪問地調査2009」で、訪日外国人旅行者が訪日前に期待したことで「食事」が初めて1位になった。この調査は、日本での旅行を終えて全国8ヶ所の国際空港と博多港から出国する外国人旅行者を対象に滞在中の実態を調べるもので、JNTOが毎年実施している。設問の選択肢の変更などもあって単純比較はできないものの、食事は2006年度調査では19.4％であったところが、2007年度には36.5％、2008年度には37.0％と大きく伸びている。
日本の食事に満足したと答えた回答者に、特に満足したメニューや食べ物を聞いた質問では「寿司」が42.1％と最も高く、「ラーメン」が20.8％、「刺身」が19.8％と続いた。寿司は、ビジット・ジャパン・キャンペーン（VJC）の重要市場のなかでは台湾を除いて全市場で1位となった。台湾は36.2％のラーメンが最多であった。
一方、訪問地の傾向には大きな変化は見えず、地方別の訪問率は関東が前年比1.0ポイント増の64.5％、関西が0.3ポイント減の33.1％、中部が0.1ポイント減の20.8％と順位が変わらなかった。都道府県別でも東京（58.8％）、大阪（24.4％）、京都（20.6％）、神奈川（16.7％）など7位まで順位に変動はなかったが、北海道（8.0％）が初めて兵庫県（7.9％）を上回って8位となった。
このほか、観光客のリピーター率は1.0ポイント増の56.3％で、米英露の3ヶ国を除いて上昇。また、旅行形態では台湾以外のほとんどの市場で個人旅行化が進み、全体では6.3ポイント増の63.8％が個人旅行で訪日した。
なお、調査は新千歳、仙台、成田、羽田、中部、関西、福岡、那覇の各空港と博多港から出国する、滞在日数が2日以上90日以下の外国人旅行者を対象に実施。2009年1月と2月、7月と8月、10月と11月の6ヶ月間で1万5355人から回答を得た。
2) Air Canada to Start Haneda/Vancouver Daily Direct Service from January 2011
Air Canada (AC) will operate daily direct flight between Tokyo’s Haneda Airport and Vancouver from January 29, 2011. The airline currently operates daily service on its Narita/Vancouver route. The new service from Haneda is part of the airline’s strategy of expanding its international route network. Air Canada plans to improve the passenger friendliness, providing customers with two options, with Haneda Airport enjoying easy access within approximately 30 minutes from central Tokyo and with Narita Airport providing excellent connectivity between domestic and international flights afforded by Star Alliance partner airlines.
Aircraft to be put into service will be Boeing B767-300ER configured with Executive First Class and Economy Class with 211 seats in total.

エア・カナダ、羽田／バンクーバー直行便を就航－2011年1月からデイリーで
エア・カナダ（AC）は2011年1月29日から、羽田／バンクーバー線の直行便をデイリーで運航する。ACはすでに成田／バンクーバー線をデイリー運航しており、羽田線の就航はACの国際線拡大戦略の一環。利用者に対し、東京都市部から約30分とアクセスのよい羽田と、スターアライアンスのパートナーとの国内線・国際線の乗り継ぎが便利な成田という2つの選択肢を提供することで、利便性の向上をはかる方針だ。
機材はボーイングB767-300ER型機でエグゼクティブ・ファーストクラスとエコノミークラスの2クラス計211席で運航する。詳細なスケジュールは下記の通り。

3 Mexico Helps Travelers Affected by Mexicana Airlines Shutdown
Mexico’s Secretariats of Communications and Transport (SCT), Tourism (SECTUR), Economy (SE) and Foreign Affairs (SRE) announced actions to attend to travelers affected by the suspension of operations by airlines operated by Nuevo Grupo Aeronáutico, including Mexicana Airlines, Mexicana and Click Mexicana Link. In a joint press conference on Thursday, Mexico Tourism Secretary Gloria Guevara Manzo reported that tourism numbers during the last two weeks in the 70 destinations monitored by Sectur were up from the same period in 2008 and 2009, indicating that the country’s tourism activity had not suffered interruptions. Hotel occupancy rates at the end of the summer holiday period were up 2 percent from the same period in 2008 and 9 percent compared with the same period in 2008 in the 70 locations monitored by Sectur, according to Secretary Guevara.Secretary Guevara said that a domestic tourism help number (078) had been set up to assist tourists affected by the flight cancellations. She also said the government was working with several airlines to increase Mexico’s international air connectivity. For example, Air Canada will increase the frequency of flights between Montreal and Ixtapa, between Montreal and Cozumel, and between Calgary and Cancun, while British Airways will operate a direct flight from London to Cancun. According to the Secretary, increased demand from Canada is expected to translate into an increase of between 20 and 37 percent in the number of tourists visiting Mexico from that country compared with in 2009. Julian Ventura, Assistant Secretary of Foreign Relations for North America, said that embassies and consulates in Mexico were continuing to monitor the situation at affected airports and providing guidance and information regarding travel alternatives. Particular attention is being paid to consumers with special needs, such as minors or individuals with disabilities, he said.

1) US Visa Waiver Scheme ESTA Fee in September – Credit Card Payment
Under the Travel Promotion Act of 2009 (TPA), the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will require travelers from Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries to pay operational and travel promotion fees when applying for ESTA beginning September 8, 2010. The total fee will be $14.00, $4.00 of which will be used to recover the cost of administering the ESTA system; the remaining $10.00 is mandated in the TPA. This is the first time that a fee has been required for applications to ESTA.
Payment can be made using any of the following credit cards: MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover. Payments can also be made with a debit card that holds the Visa or MasterCard symbol. DHS is continuing to explore other payment measures. The ESTA registration form provides instructions regarding the payment process.
米ESTAが9月に有料化、取得料は14米ドルに－支払いはクレジットカード
米国税関国境警備局（CBP）は、9月8日から電子渡航認証システム（ESTA）の取得を有料化すると発表した。「旅行促進法（TPA：Travel Promotion Act）」により、米国の旅行者増加や観光産業の発展をめざしてプロモーションするための費用にあてられる。当初は10米ドルの予定であったが、CBPがESTAのシステム維持費として4米ドルを追加し、取得のために必要な手数料は合計で14米ドルとなる。
手数料を徴収するのは、ESTAを新規取得する際と、パスポートを新しくした際など再申請する場合。例えば2年間の有効期間内に、登録情報を更新するだけの場合などは無料という。支払いはクレジットカードかデビットカードのみ受け付け、現在のところマスターカード、ビザ、アメリカン・エキスプレス、ディスカバーの使用を認めている。
2) JAL International Fare Fuel Surcharge from October to December 2010
The JAL Group will maintain the current level of fuel surcharge for all international passenger tickets issued between October and December, 2010. The price of Singapore kerosene-type jet fuel during the 3 month period from May to July 2010 averaged US$86.84 per barrel. With reference to the fuel surcharge benchmark list for the fiscal year of 2010 , this remains corresponding to Zone C where fuel surcharges range from 500 yen on a Japan – Korea ticket to 10,500 yen on a Japan – USA ticket per person per sector flown, on tickets purchased in Japan. This level of surcharge will be applied to all international passenger tickets issued between October 1, and December 31, 2010.

日本航空（JL）は10月1日から12月31日発券分までの国際線燃油サーチャージ額を現行と同額に据え置いた。適用額の指標となる5月から7月までのシンガポールケロシン市況価格の3ヶ月平均は1バレルあたり86.84米ドルだったため、現行のゾーンCを適用。これにより、10月から11月発券分までは全日空（NH）と同額となる。燃油サーチャージ額は、韓国が500円、北米が1万500円など。
3) Tokyo’s Haneda Airport to Regain Slots for International Flights
Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, which had been the largest international airport in the country until the current largest international gateway Narita Airport was built in 1978, has regained slots for some international flights. They will begin the airport’s new fourth runway is completed and officially opened on Oct. 21. This new opening is the expansion of Haneda’s capacity and function to long-haul international flights during low-traffic hours in early morning and late night. And the airport is located actually within Tokyo, and it only takes 13 minutes by train to get on the Yamanote Line, Tokyo’s main loop. Among the 13 international destinations connected directly to Haneda, three U.S. carriers (American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Hawaiian Airlines) and two Japanese carriers (Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways) will serve nonstop flights from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Detroit, Honolulu and New York JFK Airport.
羽田空港 – 新国際線旅客ターミナルオープン
近年最大の国際空港である成田空港が1978年に建設されるまでの間、国内最大の国際空港だった羽田空港は、いくつかの国際便を取り戻した。10月21日には正式に新しい4本目の滑走路がオープンする。この新オープニングは、早朝・深夜における低交通量の時間帯に長距離国際線への羽田空港の容量と機能を拡張する。また、同空港は東京都内に位置し、東京のメインループである山手線で13分程の距離にある。 羽田空港の13の国際線直行便路線の中で、米系キャリアー3社（アメリカン航空、デルタ航空、ハワイアン航空）と日系キャリアー2社（日本航空、全日空）は、サンフランシスコ、ロサンジェルス、デトロイト、ホノルル、ニューヨーク（JFK）へ直行便を提供する。
1) Hotel Okura Acquires Majority Share in JAL Hotels
Hotel Okura Co., Ltd. announced on Aug. 6 that it had entered into an agreement with Japan Airlines International Co., Ltd. (JALI) to acquire 79.6 percent of the issued shares of JAL Hotels Co., Ltd. held by JALI. Hotel Okura’s objective is to strengthen global competitiveness and establish its position as a Japan-originating global hotel chain that contributes to Japan’s hotel industry. The company operates mainly in Japan and other Asian regions, and strives to become the number one hotel in each destination.
Additionally, after acquisition, Hotel Nikko and Hotel JAL City will retain their names. Various programs, gift certificates, coupons and other marketing programs related to JAL mileage will also continue.
オークラ、JALホテルズを買収、ブランドやクーポンなど維持－相互協力へ
ホテルオークラは8月6日、日本航空インターナショナル（JLI）からJALホテルズの発行済株式の79.6％を取得することを発表した。オークラは、アジア地域での事業展開などのビジョンが共通しているために親和性が高いと説明したという。
今後は、ホテル事業の運営について、相互に連携して協力体制を構築する。ただし、JALホテルズが展開してきた「ホテル日航」「ホテルJALシティ」などのブランドは継続使用し、日本航空（JL）のマイレージ関連のプログラム、各種利用券やクーポン券、マーケティングプログラムも維持する。
2) Access Improvement Plan Finalized for Haneda’s Further Expansion – Addressing Customer Service Improvements As Well
With further expansion of Tokyo’s Haneda Airport slated for completion in October this year, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure Transport and Tourism (MLIT) formulated on July 21 a new direction for improvements of access to Haneda Airport in order to enhance the user-friendliness. The direction reflects the review and coordination which Kanto District Transport Bureau and transport operators have been working on with the main aim of “improving user-friendliness and comfort for passengers flying international flights” and “providing access to and from Haneda for late night departure flights and early morning arrival flights.”
In a drive to improve convenience and comfort for passengers departing and arriving by international flights, KEIKYU, Keihin Electric Express Railway and Tokyo Monorail will open the respective new stations with direct access to the international passenger terminals. At the stations, the ticket gates allow passengers with large luggage to pass through with a baggage cart. Also, passengers connecting international and domestic flights at Haneda will be provided free transportation between the terminals.
Buses, presently operating into the domestic area, will extend services to the international area with some exceptions. The improved services include information in foreign languages at the train stations, easier access to the bus terminals, concierge service for taxis and assistance to passengers with large luggage and group passengers.
羽田再拡張後のアクセス改善案まとまる－サービス向上などの取り組みも
国土交通省は7月21日、10月の羽田空港再拡張を前に交通アクセスの利便性向上についての方向性を取りまとめた。関東運輸局と交通事業者などがこれまで進めてきた検討と調整の結果を踏まえたもので、「国際線の利用者ニーズにあわせた利便性と快適性の向上」と「深夜早朝時間帯の航空機の発着に対応した交通アクセス手段の確保」が主眼。
国際線利用者への利便性と快適性の向上では、京急電鉄と東京モノレールが国際線旅客ターミナルに直結する新駅を開業。新駅では、大きな荷物にも対応できるよう、改札内にカートで入れるようにする。また、国際線と国内線を乗り継ぐ旅客については、ターミナル間移動での利用を無料とする。
バスも、現在国内線地区に乗り入れている路線は、一部を除いて原則的に新国際線地区に乗り入れる。また、駅での外国語案内やバス乗り場の分かりやすさ、タクシーの接客、大きな手荷物を持った旅客やグループ客への対応も盛り込んだ。
一方、深夜早朝時間のアクセス確保では、京急が5月15日のダイヤ改正で列車を増発したほか、東京モノレールが始発時間の繰り上げなどを検討中。バスも、航空路線の運航スケジュールの決定状況を踏まえて、既存の池袋や新宿、品川、横浜へのチャーター便運行に加えて、新規運行や始発繰り上げ、終発繰り下げなどを検討しているところ。タクシーについては、供用開始後当面は乗り場指導員とポーターを24時間体制とする予定だ。
3) Lan, Tam talk about a potential combination – LATAM Airlines
Two of South America’s biggest airlines, Chile’s LAN and Brazil’s TAM, on Friday announced they planned to merge to create Latin America’s largest carrier. The new parent group would be called LATAM Airlines but the separate TAM and LAN logos would be maintained on aircraft in each country, the airlines said in a joint statement. If the marriage goes ahead, the new airline would have combined revenues of employ some 40,000 workers and fly passengers to 115 destinations in 23 countries. TAM is a member of the Star Alliance airline cooperation group while LAN is part of Oneworld.

LAN航空（LA）とTAMブラジル航空（JJ）はこのほど経営統合を表明した拘束力のない覚書（MOU）を締結した。共同の持ち株会社を設立する計画で、統合は株式交換方式で実施。新しい会社の名称はLATAMエアラインズ・グループとした。LAとJJのブランドはそのまま継続する。両社の合併が実現すると、従業員4万人以上、23ヶ国の115地域以上に運航する、南米最大の航空グループが誕生することになる。なお、LAはワンワールドに、JJはスターアライアンスに加盟しているが、現時点ではアライアンスの加盟変更などの動きはないという。
1) Mexicana Suspends Ticket Sales But Says Flights Continue to Fly
Mexicana has suspended its flight sales but continues to operate its flights as scheduled to protect its passengers, it said in a posting on its website today. The airline began bankruptcy proceedings earlier this week in New York and Mexico City but said that it would continue to operate as normal. It also began negotiating with its unions.
Separately, ARC said that since Mexicana has suspended all ticket sales, ARC has stopped processing transactions for the airline effective immediately and until further notice.
Mexicana’s domestic flights continue to operate and can be purchased normally. Domestic flights are operated by Click and Link, CMA’s independent sister airlines, and are not affected by this process. There are no changes on domestic flights.

メキシカーナ航空の国内線チケット販売は通常どおり継続する。国内線は独立姉妹会社Click and Link, CMA’sによって運営され、このプロセスによる影響を受けない。また、国内線の変更はない。
2) Haneda’s New Intl Terminal To Charge Y2,000 Airport Fee
The Transport Ministry said on July 30 that it has approved an airport fee of up to 2,000 yen per adult for the new international passenger terminal at Tokyo’s Haneda airport.
The ministry has also approved a transit fee of as much as 1,000 yen per adult for passengers in transit at the new terminal.
The airport and transit fees are typically tacked onto ticket prices.

国土交通省航空局は7月30日、羽田空港の新国際線旅客ターミナルの旅客取扱施設利用料の上限を認可した。これは、国際線旅客ターミナルビルの整備や運営を担う東京国際空港ターミナルが申請した料金を上限として認めたもの。また、同料金は、旅客の航空券購入時に航空券に含めて同時に徴収されることとなる。なお、料金は下記の通り。
1) Delta Flights from U.S. to Tokyo Haneda to Begin Jan. 29
Delta Air Lines announced start dates for new daily, year-round flights between Tokyo’s Haneda Airport and Detroit and Los Angeles. The new flights, which begin Jan. 29, will be available for sale to customers beginning Saturday, July 17. The new service becomes available for sale following a recent U.S. Department of Transportation decision giving Delta’s global alliance — SkyTeam — its first opportunity to compete across the Pacific from Haneda. All Delta flights between the United States and Haneda will operate using 403-seat Boeing 747-400 aircraft.

2) Boeing 787 Dreamliner Makes International Debut
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner made its international debut landing at the Farnborough Airport over the weekend in support of the Farnborough International Airshow that begins Monday. “It’s an honor to showcase the 787 here at the Farnborough Airshow,” said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “I can’t think of a finer stage on which to present this highly anticipated airplane.”This is the first international trip made by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The airplane came via nonstop flight to Farnborough, U.K., from Seattle. “We took advantage of the flying time to conduct some flight testing on the way,” Fancher said. “We’re taking every opportunity to complete our testing requirements when we fly.”

ロンドン郊外のファンボロー空港で7月19日、「ファンボロー・エアショー2010」が始まり、ボーイング社（Boeing）の次世代中型機「ボーイング 787 ドリームライナー」も飛来し、国際デビューを果たした。アメリカのシアトルからイギリスのファンボローまで飛行したのは、787型機のフライトテスト用3 号機で、「ボーイング787 ドリームライナー」が海外まで飛行するのは今回が初めて。今回のフライトについて、同社副社長は「ファンボロー・エアショーで787を披露できることは大変光栄です。私は（現地に）飛行機を送る以上の方法を思いつきませんでした」と述べた。「ボーイング787 ドリームライナー」は夢の旅客機と言われ、まるで鳥の翼のような反った主翼に、広いキャビン、大型化した窓、最新の空調設備などを採用した。また、機体に多くの炭素複合材を用いて軽量化し、最新のジェットエンジンを導入し、従来同型の飛行機に比べ、約20％もの燃費向上を実現している。
3) NYC Hotel Association Backs Law to Close Illegal Hotels
President of the Hotel Association of New York City, Inc., spoke out in support of state legislation to crack down on illegal hotels in New York City. “New York City’s millions of visitors deserve safe and legal hotel accommodations,” The president said. “That’s why the Hotel Association of New York City urges Gov. Paterson to sign into law A.10008-B/S.6873-B, a measure approved by the State Legislature to help assure that all city visitors have a safe and legal place to stay.

3) Lufthansa to launch A380 flights to Tokyo
Lufthansa commence scheduled A380 flights on the Frankfurt-Tokyo route, on June 11. The Airbus A380 has 526 seats in the best and most modern service classes offered by Lufthansa. The first A380 named the “Frankfurt am Main” has a new generation engine that reduces fuel consumption and noise about 3 liters per person to carry 100 passenger kilometers. The completely revamped First Class has eight seats on the upper deck, Business Class has 98 seats on the upper deck, and Economy Class has 420 seats on the main deck.
ルフトハンザ、日本路線にA380型機を導入
ルフトハンザ・ドイツ航空（LH）は6月11日から、フランクフルト／成田線にエアバスA380型機を導入した。それにともない、6月16日から21日の期間、航空ジャーナリスト、新聞、各種雑誌記者を対象とした搭乗体験プレスツアーを実施。「フランクフルト・アム・マイン」と命名された第1号機は、乗客1名を100キロメートル運ぶのに約3リットルの燃料消費と騒音を低減する新世代エンジンを搭載。機内デザインや設備は、エアバスと共同開発し、湿度調整装置、照明設備など世界初となる多くの技術を実現している。座席数は計526席でアッパーデッキ（2階）にはファーストクラス8席とビジネスクラス98席、メインデッキ（1階）にはエコノミークラス420席を配置する。
日本航空、国際線燃油サーチャージ額を据え置き－日系2社10月、11月は同額
日本航空（JL）は10月1日から12月31日発券分までの国際線燃油サーチャージ額を現行と同額に据え置いた。適用額の指標となる5月から7月までのシンガポールケロシン市況価格の3ヶ月平均は1バレルあたり86.84米ドルだったため、現行のゾーンCを適用。これにより、10月から11月発券分までは全日空（NH）と同額となる。燃油サーチャージ額は、韓国が500円、北米が1万500円など。
3) Tokyo’s Haneda Airport to Regain Slots for International Flights
Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, which had been the largest international airport in the country until the current largest international gateway Narita Airport was built in 1978, has regained slots for some international flights. They will begin the airport’s new fourth runway is completed and officially opened on Oct. 21.
This new opening is the expansion of Haneda’s capacity and function to long-haul international flights during low-traffic hours in early morning and late night. And the airport is located actually within Tokyo, and it only takes 13 minutes by train to get on the Yamanote Line, Tokyo’s main loop.
Among the 13 international destinations connected directly to Haneda, three U.S. carriers (American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Hawaiian Airlines) and two Japanese carriers (Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways) will serve nonstop flights from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Detroit, Honolulu and New York JFK Airport.
羽田空港 – 新国際線旅客ターミナルオープン
近年最大の国際空港である成田空港が1978年に建設されるまでの間、国内最大の国際空港だった羽田空港は、いくつかの国際便を取り戻した。10月21日には正式に新しい4本目の滑走路がオープンする。
この新オープニングは、早朝・深夜における低交通量の時間帯に長距離国際線への羽田空港の容量と機能を拡張する。また、同空港は東京都内に位置し、東京のメインループである山手線で13分程の距離にある。
羽田空港の13の国際線直行便路線の中で、米系キャリアー3社（アメリカン航空、デルタ航空、ハワイアン航空）と日系キャリアー2社（日本航空、全日空）は、サンフランシスコ、ロサンジェルス、デトロイト、ホノルル、ニューヨーク（JFK）へ直行便を提供する。
