Hello! This is Yamanishi from Wing Mate Call Center, Osaka Desk.
“ICHIGO-ICHIE” – this is yet another popular Japanese saying, even mentioned on the TV Show “Heroes”. This means “One Time in a Lifetime” or “Never Again”, but I recently learned that it originally came from Senno Rikyu (1522-1591), a classic Tea Master from Sakai City, here in Osaka.
“This moment will never happen again. Cherish the moment and do your very best to serve the guest” is what Rikyu meant to show his hospitality of hosting the Tea Ceremony. Even more than 400 years later, this still has been the immutable and universal philosophy for Customer Service Industry, which includes us the travel agents.
I often recall this phrase when I fly on the airplane.
Hundreds of strangers are packed in a small cabin of the aircraft for hours, flying all together from point A to point B, while breathing the same air, munching the same in-flight snack, experiencing the same turbulence, and seeing the same view and movies. However, there is one big difference between each and every passenger on the very same flight; “Why you are flying”, and that’s what always makes my flight interesting.
Some people have just started their trips, and some other people are almost completing their trips.
Some people are leaving for another continent for wonderful vacations they have dreamed so much for a long time, and some other people are returning from another country with successful business deals they have worked so hard for a long time.
It may be your first flight in 10 days, but it may be their first flight in 10 years.
Some people are very nervous during the flight, because they are concerned about how many deals they can close after visiting their important clients tomorrow, or because they are worried about how much tasks being piled up on their desks after returning from their vacation tomorrow.
Some people are flying to attend a special occasion, from memorial to wedding celebration.
Some people are grabbing a seat on the first row to save even just for a single second, because it’s hard to say good bye to someone before boarding, or because they can hardly wait to see someone after landing.
Of course this could be a common experience when you take the train or even drive on the freeway, but what makes unique to flying is that the same bunch of people are traveling all together, from take off to landing, without leaving or joining in the middle of a journey. Also, do we even get that close to your family physically, sometimes over 10 hours, while sleeping, eating, and doing other stuff continuously and simultaneously?
It’s just a metal tube with wings, flying and carrying around various people and various minds. New mobile technology only enables and forces us to work on the flight as hard as we do in the office, but next time when you fly, may I suggest having a quick break, sipping a cup of tea, and taking a guess why your seat mate is flying with you today. Or better yet, simply start a little chat with “So, what brings you up here?” Because this is a unique, one and only flight which you will never again experience the same.
